I am so pleased with myself today as I completed a half marathon with another PB.

I know speed is not everything and when my long runs get longer I will be aiming for distance rather than speed but I am still like a excited child at getting a new PB 🙂

Half Marathon Blues

Sunday 10th February 2019

Although I had been looking forward to this run as I like to push myself, I planned to take it easier as my last run was Tuesday.

I have no problem with easy runs, I can put my music on or a listen to a podcast and just get lost in thought. I do however find it frustrating when I struggle to do anything BUT an easy pace, I know I missed a few days of training but my legs got pretty tired very quick. At around the 6 mile mark my brain was suggesting quitting and going home but I just kept thinking “just 1 more lap”.

A few miles into my run the top of my right foot started to hurt, I googled it when I got home and I was told that it was due to having my trainers too tight. I have been tightening my trainers more recently as I have been getting sore toes from having my trainers too loose, Catch 22??? lol

I will change back to my road trainers now anyway as my trail trainers are wearing too much on one side now, I need to save up for new trainers.

My legs were stiff when I got home and actually I think my legs were better after my Marathon last year than this Half Marathon, I did leave me feeling a bit down to have such a slow run but I was pleased I completed the distance.

I did managed to try out my new action camera – A Kitvision escape 4kw, I had this strapped to my chest in the hope of getting some good footage. The quality of the video was great, not jumpy like my last camera but unfortunately for me I recorded the footage in slow motion and I recorded the pavement the whole time as I did not have the camera pointed up high enough. Next time 🙂

I used the RunGo App again today, I did not play any music so I can hear the directions and boy did I hear them, I am running in the dark through wooded area when suddenly the app would scream into life to give me a mile update or directions, I jumped ten feet every flaming time, I even jumped when I was expecting the voice (100 yards before due to make a turn). I could have turned the volume down but I was so pleased to hear it clearly that I left it at max, I love that app, well worth the money.

10k Race and ParkRun

Saturday I ran my first ParkRun and it was great, I did wear the wrong trainers though, I was told it was mostly gravel in the park so rather than wear my muddy trail trainers I wore my nice clean white road trainers, BIG MISTAKE! The ParkRun was all on the mud and I got covered in it. After the first mile I gave up trying to avoid the mud puddles. It was worth it though and I would definitely run another ParkRun.

Today we still have no snow and the weather had warmed up a bit – 4º if I remember right so I was warm enough on my run.

Today I ran a 10k race, I did not get the fastest time but it was still fun.

Steady run

Friday 1st February 2019

This afternoon I had a fantastic couple of days, Thursday evening I completed a 45 minute indoor cycle as it was too cold to run outside (I know bad excuse), I really enjoyed it but I think the run would have been better.

Today I wanted to try another new route so I uploaded one of my running club runs onto my RunGo App and off I went.

The route was labeled as 6.4 miles so only a little over the 6 miles my schedule asked for but with making a few wrong turns and with continuing after the finishing point to get closer to my house I clocked up 8 and a 1/2 miles. The route had huge hills so by the time I got home my legs felt like jelly.

The RunGo App worked pretty well this time, It did not crash (It only crashed last time because my phone was closing it to save battery) and it gave clear and timely turn by turn instructions. I did find it was hard to hear some instructions over my music though. With my other apps they always mute the music when giving instructions but not this one.

I will check the settings tomorrow and if i cannot adjust them then I will just not listen to music when using the app.

This evening a group of us from the running club went wall climbing at Croywall in Croydon. I had such a fantastic time and felt really knackered at the end and I do have a really large blister on my hand now but I am assuming that just tells me I worked hard right?? 🙂

I will be running my first Park Run tomorrow and I am really looking forward to it.

It is only 3 miles so should be a really fun morning.

Wow this morning was fresh – 1º in fact.

It was later than I planned to go for my run, I was aiming for a midnight run but in fact it was just after 4am instead. I did put on my rain coat for my warm-up jog but took that off after as I knew I would get too warm when I started running.

I am so exited – I have manage to book a place in the Dorset Marathon for November.

The Marathon is 27.7 miles which is more than I have ever ran before but the scenery looks fantastic, it does have loads of hills so after my half marathon in March I will have to start some hill and trail training.

The hotels in the area are a little more expensive than I expected but I have 10 months to save 🙂

Sunday long run

Today was long run day, 10 Miles to be exact, It was cold to start with but it did not take long to warm up, I got a new personal record for the run.

Strength training with J-Leigh

Saturday 19th January 2017


This afternoon I made myself an Anchovy and mushroom omelette with fresh chillies and coriander, It was really filling and tasty.

I love cooking omelette as I can use up the leftover stuff from the fridge and it still turns out tasty.


Today was strength training day, J-Leigh and I completed the same workout as last time and it was really great, we were a bit quicker this time as we were more confident and remembering each exercise more.

30 Minute Interval run (ok 33 Mins)

Friday 18th January 2019

No change on todays weight, I am at a good weight so as long as I don’t go up in weight I am happy.

I had a really good sleep this morning which always gives me more energy when I got up. Normal breakfast of oats, strawberries and banana.

I managed to get a lot of housework done and all the dinner prepped before my wife got home from work, she cooked the dinner for me so I could go for my run.

30 Minute interval run, up until now I have been doing a 30 second run, 2 minute jog but wanted to change it and challenge myself more so after a quick web search I found a web site suggesting the following –

  • 2 minute jog
  • 30 second run
  • 2 minute jog
  • and 1 minute run
  • repeat 6 times (33 minutes).

I put as much effort into the run as I could, to me it felt like a sprint, the 30 second runs were hard but over really quick but the 1 minute runs I was pleased each time I heard “Slow run for 2 minutes” come out of my headphones :). I did like mixing the fast runs between 30 seconds and 1 minute each set.

I was expecting my Strava App to be singing my praises with my really fast run but apparently  it was nothing special lol.

5 Mile easy run with Tigger

Thursday 17th January 2019 I did not get to update my blog on Tuesday or Wednesday as I just ran out of time so my apologies if todays is a bit long. Tuesday I had gained 1 lb and Wednesday no change but this today I had dropped 2.2 lbs which is much better. Tuesday was strength exercise day. I did the same as Friday but slightly heavier weights, My daughter also done the workout with me which made it fun. I think increasing the weight slightly was the answer – I felt really good when I finished. Wednesday was my 40 Minute tempo run – made up of 4 minutes warm-up, 15 minute steady run, 3 minute easy run, 15 minute steady run and finishing with a 3 minute easy run. 5.05 mi 7:56 /mi 40m 3s Thursday afternoon was really busy, I had my usual oats, strawberries and banana breakfast was lovely.


I spent the next 2 hours catching up on housework and getting everything ready so that I can start cooking dinner as soon as I get back from my run. This afternoon I had a 5 mile easy run to do so I thought I would bring my lovely dog Tigger with me. I have mentioned this before but Tigger does not like men taking him for walks. When we got Tigger he was pup and he has always been this way. Tigger would get very exited but when he gets 10 feet or so from the front door he then refuses to budge and sits down. If I try to give him a gentle tug then he would lay down, If I try again he would lay on his back with his feet in the air. This can be embarrassing and frustrating when you want to go for a run. Most of the time I leave it to the girls to walk him as it’s easier. Well today was a good day as he did actually let me take him for a run, Tigger tried to sit down once but changed his mind. We are half a mile from a park so we ran there, in the park I was able to take the lead off Tigger and he ran by my side the whole time. It was a fantastic run although my pace was a little faster than I intended. Total: 5.40 miles in 48:25 8:58 min/mi Today I cooked my very first vegan meal, a veggie-con-carne as Jamie Oliver put it, I am not vegan and have no plans to ever be but when I saw Jamie Oliver cook it I thought wow, this looks great. I don’t think it hurts to leave meat off the plate every now and then either (I know vegan is more than just giving up meat). The meal was really delicious but I put too much cayenne pepper in it, I loved the spice but my wife and daughter was not so impressed, my wife even got a can of drink out off the fridge and stuck her tongue onto it to cool her down lol. As usual I made extra so I can put in tubs, freeze and eat at work for lunch. Well I ran out of time to do a strength workout at home so I bought my camping mat (perfect size, cheap and comfy) and done my workout on my break at work, I have a 20 minute break just after 9 so down goes the mat, off comes my shoes and I do a fantastic bodyweight workout. It takes just under 10 minutes and leaves me with enough time to pack the everything up afterwards 🙂 Well I am off to sleep now, Night all
